Where the rocks come from
Construction never stops here — and neither do the dump trucks feeding it. Aggregate spilling from truck beds and stones thrown up by tires are the two big sources, which is why the classic South Florida chip arrives on I-95, the Turnpike, I-75 across the Alley, or the Palmetto during rush hour. Following distance helps; two car lengths of extra space behind anything hauling gravel is the cheapest windshield insurance sold.
The five-day rule of thumb
A fresh chip is clean, dry and tight — the ideal patient. Within days, Florida does what Florida does: an afternoon downpour drives water into the break, sun bakes it, dust settles in, and the repair that would have cured nearly invisible now cures merely sound. The structural fix works either way; the cosmetic result rewards speed. Since the van comes to you, speed costs you nothing but a phone call.

What Florida drivers actually pay for auto glass
Florida's glass rules are unusual, and half of what customers have heard about them is out of date. Here is the current version, statutes named.
The windshield deductible rule is real — and specific
Florida Statute 627.7288 says that if you carry comprehensive coverage on a private passenger vehicle, your insurer cannot apply a deductible to windshield repair or replacement. That is the insurer's obligation, not a shop discount. It covers the windshield only — not door, vent, quarter or back glass — and it does not apply if you carry liability-only cover.
Door and back glass work differently
Every other piece of glass on the vehicle falls under your normal comprehensive deductible. If the deductible is higher than the cost of the work, paying cash is simply cheaper — we will tell you which side of that line your job lands on before anything is booked.
The gift-card pitch is now illegal here
Florida's 2023 auto glass law (SB 1002) prohibits offering gift cards, cash or any incentive in exchange for a windshield insurance claim, and ended assignment-of-benefits for glass work. A shop still making that offer is telling you something about how it operates. We do not, and never did.
No comprehensive cover? That is common
Plenty of South Florida drivers carry liability only. You get the same visit, the same glass options quoted for your exact VIN, and a written figure before we book — nothing is priced on this site because no honest number exists before we know the vehicle and the glass.

- New impact damage — a fresh rock is a fresh job

- Defects in the glass itself, which carry the manufacturer's warranty

Frequently asked
Mechanically no — "rock chip" describes the cause, and the damage is the same family of bullseyes and star breaks we repair every day. The distinction that matters is size, age and position on the glass, which decide whether it repairs cleanly or has graduated to replacement territory.
You can, and sometimes you get away with it — but the failure mode is not gradual. The chip sits quiet until one hot afternoon plus one cold blast of A/C sends a crack across the driver's view in a second. The repair costs a fraction of that outcome, which is the whole argument.
